Recent findings show that the fresh water lake was once filled with water from the sea — traces of an ancient beach littered with sea shells may still be found at the lake botoom 30 feet below the surface. Taal lake is home to the only known species of sea snake that inhabits fresh water, Hydrophis semperi. Fish known as tawilis and maliputo, for which Taal is famous, are likewise the only species of their kind found mostly in fresh water.
