To many people, buying a house is not quite an option because of their lack of funds, making renting a popular alternative. Unfortunately, it’s also this reason that rental fees have been on the rise. If you are thinking about settling for a rental, there are several ways that you can save, such as asking for a discount.
More often than not, the rates that a landlord sets for his house for rent is not set in stone, which is good news because this gives you a great chance of getting him to discount your monthly rate. Here are some ways that you can ask the landlord to lower the rent:
Inform him that other rentals in the area cost less
Visit several rentals in the area and compare their prices to the rate of the house you are eyeing. If the property you want is priced higher than similar rentals in the area, don't be afraid to point this out. The landlord may have either priced the property incorrectly without knowing, or did so on purpose. Either way, informing him about it may convince him to cut your rates.
Sell yourself
If you really want a discount, this is no time to be modest. Tell him about how clean your credit is, and what a great tenant you’ve been in the past. The landlord will need some assurance that you do deserve to live in the home for a lower monthly rental fee, so you might have to show some proof, such as recommendation letters from previous landlords, as well as evidence of your good credit.
Pay cash in advance
In this business, cash can sway almost anyone, so it might be worth your money if you offer to pay several months’ rent in advance. There are those who pay a full year’s rent in advance just to secure a lower rate, and this technique almost always works because it’s a win-win for both the landlord and the tenant. If you are willing to do this, just make sure that the house is not on the verge of foreclosure, and that you absolutely love the area and have no plans of moving only after a few months.
If all else fails, ask if he has other available houses for rent that costs less. Otherwise, there may be other rentals in that area that costs less but is sufficient enough to suit your preferences.
