Must-Haves for Starter Homes

For couples who are just beginning their lives together, buying a starter home is one of the first things decisions that they will make together. Don’t assume that a starter house is one that you can easily trade in after a while, though; you don’t want your savings to go into something that you can’t use for a long time. Besides, the real estate market tends to be temperamental, so you might not find another house that easily.

While a couple may have varying tastes when it comes to some aspects of their first home (a garden for her; a man cave for him), these are some of the things that should be considered mandatory when looking for a house for sale.

1.       It has to be affordable – As any new couple will know, the price of the house matters if they want to be able to afford to pay for it for a while. Finding an affordable house will also ensure that their savings won’t be completely depleted after the down payment. Also, they want to be able to set aside some money for when they’re ready to raise a family, and they won’t be able to do this if most of their income goes to paying the mortgage.

2.       It has to have enough space – Don’t just consider yourself and your partner when looking at a property’s space; make sure that the house will fit your long-term requirements. If having kids is part of your plans for the near future, take that into consideration. It would be better to buy a house with extra space and not need it for now than to buy a house good for two, only to find out that you have one on the way.

3.       It has to be in a great location – If it’s a house you’re going to stay in for quite a while, be sure to choose one that’s in an ideal spot. Choosing a home that’s close to your office and important amenities is a given, but be sure to select one that’s in a great neighborhood that you see yourself staying in for a long time, and is close to a great school for when you have kids.

4.       It has to be in great shape - Remember, when you buy a home, it has to be one that you can live in for a long time. A few minor repair needs are acceptable, but steer clear of homes that require major renovations or replacements; you don’t want to buy a fixer-upper end up spending a lot of money in repairs when you can spend the same amount on a property that’s in better condition.

Investing in a house that has all these qualities will ensure that you not only have an ideal place for you and your partner to start a life together, but will also provide you with a great place to raise kids.
